Unit Objectives

1. Leadership and party management

In order to lead a group of individuals in lowland country the candidate will have demonstrated that he/she is competent:

 to identify the purpose of a journey
 to plan and prepare a scheme of work for a journey
to communicate the aim of a journey effectively to the group and individuals
to lead groups and individuals with confidence throughout a journey
 to care for groups and individuals throughout a venture
to ensure the safety of individuals at all times
to communicate the review to the group and individuals
 to demonstrate a range of leadership styles

2. Instructional and organisational methods

All Basic Expedition Leaders must be able to instruct others in the contents of Units 3-9. On completion of this unit the candidate will have demonstrated that he/she is competent to:

communicate confidently to groups
organise, prepare, manage and conduct activity sessions
use a variety of teaching aids and resources effectively
demonstrate an understanding of the subject matter in the syllabus

3. Planning and preparation

On completion of this unit the candidate will have demonstrated that he/she is competent to:

select an appropriate programme for the group
inform parents/guardians and participants of the venture
obtain parental consent in the case of minors
issue a form reguesting information concerning any relevant medical condition
arrange appropriate level and ratio of staffing
arrange insurance cover
arrange adequate support
establish communication channels for use in an emergency
carry out and record a risk assessment for the journey
select appropriate sources of information on local conditions
arrange transport reguirements
prepare costings for a venture
arrange banking procedures
produce a statement of accounts

4. Conservation and access

On completion of this unit the candidate will have demonstrated that he/she is competent to: 

agree and adhere to a code of practice for using any site
be able to educate other potential users on the impact of activities on the environment
select and obtain access to an area which intended for use
monitor and survey the area to ensure sustainable and effective use
demonstrate a basic knowledge of Rights of Way legislation

5. Navigation

On completion of this unit the candidate will have demonstrated that he/she is competent to:

set an OS 1: 50000 or 1:25000 map by relief and compass
find a location on a map
complete a journey navigating with a map
translate map symbols to ground features
translate ground features to map symbols
estimate distances travelled
prepare route cards
calculate the direction of travel with a compass
obtain a grid bearing and transfer it to Magnetic North

6. Equipment

On completion of this unit the candidate will have demonstrated that he/she is competent to:

select equipment for individual use
select equipment for group  use
select equipment for emergency use
check that all equipment is serviceable and appropriate to the planned venture

7. Living out of doors

On completion of this unit the candidate will have demonstrated that he/she is competent to:

select an appropriate campsite
arrange for meals and refreshments
maintain and use safely different types of stoves
select appropriate foods for an expedition
prepare a cooked meal
implement hygiene procedures
care for water supplies
erect a range of lightweight tents
erect a tent for a standing camp
complete a journey involving an overnight stop

8. First aid and emergencies

On completion of this unit the candidate will have successfully completed a nationally recognised certificated First Aid Award course and have demonstrated that he/she is competent to:

administer emergency aid to a casualty in the outdoors
assemble a first aid kit appropriate to the circumstances
take action to prevent accidents
report and record accidents
respond to injuries and signs of illness

The Course Director will cover other essential core areas to put the First Aid Award in the context of the outdoors. These areas include:

hypothermia
heat-stroke
blisters
burns
casualty management

9. Fitness and weather

On completion of this unit the candidate will have demonstrated that he/she is competent to:

select a venture appropriate to the abilities of the participants
select appropriate sources of weather information
apply a forecast to the plan of a venture
plan adjustments to the venture, where indicated by the weather forecast

10. 30 hrs voluntary leadership experience
