MAC (Mountain Activity Course)
This is a weekend course designed to introduce
cadets to the skills and equipment required for safe walking in a mountain
environment in summer, and to the principles and practice of top-roped rock
climbing and abseiling. The course assembles on Friday evening and travels to a
campsite - normally in North Wales - by minibus, arriving at around midnight. Saturday is spent mountain walking in wild country. Routes vary depending on
weather and the experience of course members, but typical areas are Snowdon,
Tryfan, Cadair Idris and the Rhinogs. Sunday morning is spent rock climbing and
abseiling before travelling home
At Easter we run a longer course, starting on Thursday night and finishing on
Monday afternoon. One of the additional two days is spent Mountain
Biking at Coed y Brenin, and there's an extra day for mountain walking.
This can be a strenuous course so we normally select cadets who are older, or who
have previously attended one or more mountain activity courses
